Clay Street Unit and Shadowgrass will bring a co-headlining show to Washington, D.C. on April 17, 2025, performing at The Hamilton Live as part of their spring tour spanning the East Coast. The tour pairs two rising acts who redefine what modern roots music can sound like: a little country, a little folk, a little rock, and a whole lot of soul.

Formed in Denver in 2021, with members hailing from Atlanta, Charlottesville, and Montgomery, Clay Street Unit brings together a broad mix of influences under one roof. The band's 2024 EP Introducing Clay Street Unit, released via Monument Records, captures the core of their live show while sharpening their songwriting. The three songs—two written by frontman Sam Walker and mandolinist Scottie Bolin, plus a cover of The Last Revel’s “Engine Trouble”—have quickly garnered positive attention.

Recently, the band has found a new wave of fans through TikTok, where their unexpected covers, from MGMT’s “Kids” to Cher’s “Believe,” have racked up hundreds of thousands of views. Reimagined with Clay Street Unit’s signature charm, these viral videos have led commenters to label their sound as everything from “yallternative” to “God’s country.”

Joining them on the tour is Shadowgrass, a fellow roots-forward band that began as a group of childhood jammers in Elk Creek, Virginia. Founding members Clay Russell, Luke Morris, and Kyser George were just 9, 13, and 14 when they named their band Shadowgrass and started playing shows, and over a decade later, they're still growing and gigging together.

Their 2024 sophomore album All That Will, finds the group—now joined by Madison Morris (fiddle/vocals) and Evan Campfield (bass)—exploring themes of anxiety, growth, and identity. The project reflects a pivotal moment in their evolution: rising fame brought major expectations, but it wasn’t until they stopped trying to please others that they found their voice, the band explains via their website:

“It turned out that dropping those self-imposed expectations and just writing/making music for our own enjoyment was the key to finding our collective voice and making a record we are all proud of.”

Together, Clay Street Unit and Shadowgrass offer a night that’s equal parts pickin’, stompin’, and soul-searching, and by far one of the most exciting acoustic lineups hitting the road this spring.
