After five years of songwriting and a no-holds-barred 10 days in the studio, indie sensation Hippo Campus returns with "Flood"—proof that sometimes, surrendering your preconceptions leads to making a bigger splash.

On September Hippo Campus released "Flood," their fourth and most ambitious full-length album to date. Billed as their greatest album yet, "Flood" is the product of five years of self-reflection, reinvention, and reconnection. Featuring sharp lyrics and warm, stripped-back instrumentation, it’s a sonic pivot that brings the Minnesota-based band back to their roots while reflecting their growth as individuals and musicians.
After playing sold-out release parties across the country, the band will launch their world tour in 2025 with support from Petey, Mei Semones, and Hotline TNT. Tickets for over 30 shows—including Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium, LA’s Wiltern, and of course, D.C.'s The Anthem—are available now.
Unlike the synth-heavy soundscapes of "LP3," "Flood" embraces a back-to-basics approach. Across its 13 tracks, Hippo Campus prioritizes organic arrangements—guitar, bass, drums, and vocals—with subtle reverb and moments of orchestral flourish. Produced by Caleb Wright and Brad Cook, the album’s sessions took place over 10 days at Sonic Ranch studios on the Texas border, a no-second-guessing environment that pushed the band to trust their instincts and each other.
The result is an album that feels both mature and refreshingly honest. From the constant drums of "Paranoid" to the upbeat riffs of "Madman," "Flood" radiates an inviting warmth. Vocalist Jake Luppen delivers a raw and vibrant performance, highlighting the band’s shift toward a more authentic, unrefined sound.
"Flood" remains introspective like its predecessors, but it sheds some of the angst, embracing a more nuanced honesty. Tracks like "Prayer Man" and "Flood" confront deep existential struggles, capturing feelings of disillusionment and searching for meaning. Meanwhile, “Paranoid” and “Fences” delve into self-doubt and relationship turmoil, reflecting inner conflicts and vulnerabilities. The lyricism is tempered by moments of introspective optimism, such as the hopeful "Brand New" and the reflective "I Got Time," both offering reminders to appreciate the present and the possibilities of the future.
Hippo Campus will take "Flood" on the road in 2025 with shows across North America. See the full list of dates below:
