Indie-rock trio Sunflower Bean returns to D.C. on May 23 with a performance at The Atlantis that promises to be as raw and revelatory as their latest record.

The New York trio—Julia Cumming, Nick Kivlen, and Olive Faber—has always thrived on the edge of reinvention, and their new album Mortal Primetime marks a daring turn back toward the heavy, riff-laden psychedelia that first put them on the map.
After years of personal upheaval and creative drift, the band emerged from a near-breakup with their most self-assured work yet. Mortal Primetime, released April 25, is Sunflower Bean's first self-produced LP, recorded live with a gritty, unfiltered intensity that channels both their studio finesse and onstage fury. The album dives headfirst into themes of survival, anger, and solidarity, with standout tracks like “There’s a Part I Can’t Get Back” pushing into deeply personal terrain.
In their own words on Instagram, the band described the album as follows:
“Our deepest, strongest, and most vulnerable piece of work yet. This is the baring of our hearts on a platter, asking to be devoured. This is the culmination of our journey thus far, raw and unafraid.”
On stage, expect a set that spans from shimmering psych-rock to pulverizing sludge, as Sunflower Bean bridges the distance between emotional vulnerability and sheer sonic force. Their live shows are reported to be visceral, loud, and unflinching, and they'll soon return to the road with Mortal Primetime as their backbone.
