Purity Ring will stop at Washington, D.C.’s 9:30 Club on October 29 as part of their Place of My Own Tour. The electro-pop duo, vocalist Megan James and producer Corin Roddick, are celebrating the release of their fourth album, Purity Ring, out September 26.

Formed in Edmonton, Canada, Purity Ring first turned heads in 2011 with “Ungirthed.” Their debut album, Shrines (2012), introduced a mix of ethereal vocals, glitchy synths, and surreal lyrics. Tracks like “Fineshrine” and “Obedear” became touchstones of modern electronic pop, earning critical acclaim and a devoted fanbase.

Their follow-up, Another Eternity (2015), leaned into melody while keeping their signature production quirks. The album delivered tightly structured songs that were more immediately accessible but still carried the same imaginative energy.

Over the years, James and Roddick have kept a self-contained approach: writing, producing, and performing everything themselves. That independence has allowed them to push their unique sound without compromise.

The new album expands that world-building into a full narrative. Inspired by RPGs like Final Fantasy X and NieR: Automata, it tells the story of two avatars wandering through a fractured landscape. Songs like “Place of My Own” pulse with shimmering synths and James’ airy vocals, creating a sense of drifting through both fantastical and intimate spaces. The record blends cinematic soundscapes with personal, grounded emotion.

Purity Ring’s live shows bring that world to life. From the beginning, they’ve treated performance as a natural extension of their music. The duo combines inventive instruments, dynamic lighting, and custom stage elements reacting to movement and sound, creating a visual and sonic experience that evolves with every tour.

Both have been known to wear outfits designed and sewn by Megan, adding a personal, handcrafted touch to the performance. Over the years, their live rig has grown more ambitious and intricate, reflecting the duo’s care in translating their otherworldly sound into a stage presence that is immersive, alive, and unmistakably their own.
